Weight Management- Love the body you have

Connect & Grow Magazine: Edition 13 September - October 2024

Love the body you have! How many people can do that when working on releasing excess weight? Not many, after all. We tend to look at our faults before we look at what is amazing.

So, given that we see our faults first, why would I suggest that you love the body you have?

Good question!

Our weight fluctuates, and it always will. Even when you reach your ideal weight, you will find that your weight will regularly shift between 2 and 4 kilograms. This is because of a few things: the food you eat, the amount of sleep you get, and the amount you move your body, along with stress and other emotions you may experience.

Accepting where your body is now, its size, shape, and how much energy you have is key to creating change. When you can look in the mirror and be grateful for the body you have now, which is ready to change for the right reasons, your attitude will shift to"Can do" and "I am doing!"

Your attitude towards yourself, food choices, and exercise to release the excess weight and achieve your goal are extremely important. This includes your self-talk, belief in achieving your goals, belief in yourself, and surrounding yourself with the right people.

Change can only occur when you accept where you are now and focus on your goal. This brings us back to why loving the body you have right now is key to releasing excess weight for the long term.

Once you achieve your goal, your body could look completely different, depending on how much weight you let go of and in some cases, as I experienced, there could be a lot of loose skin, which meant that clothes didn't always fit properly, even though I was the weight I wanted to be. Looking in the mirror and seeing different things that you are not happy with makes it challenging to keep going with the new habits; it can feel like there is always something else to work on, which, for some people, becomes a whole new challenge. The overall goal of weight release is often for your health and well-being, for feeling better in your body and being happy with how you look in clothes, so it starts with you where you are right now!

Who is your support network?

When sharing your goals and success, it is important to be careful with whom you share things. For me, I have a diamond circle of friends. These are people who I know want me to have success, who are happy for my success and celebrate it with me. They are also there for the challenges. No matter where they are in their health and wellbeing or their weight, as I released weight, they were there cheering me on and sharing my success.

My next circle of friends is what I refer to as the Emerald level. They are there, and I will share some general things with them, but not everything. They often look at what is in it for them as I have success.

So, who are your diamond-level people in your life, or whatever name you would like to give it? Are you sharing your goals, wins, and challenges with them and getting the support and encouragement that you require?

Remember that we are each different and individual. The more you can love who you are right now, the easier it becomes to create changes.
